Auditions for Curious Inicident of the Dog in the Night-Time

Based on the novel by Mark Haddon, fifteen-year-old Christopher has an extraordinary brain. He is exceptional at mathematics but ill-equipped to interpret everyday life. He has never ventured alone beyond the end of his road, he detests being touched, and he distrusts strangers. Now it is seven minutes after midnight, and Christopher stands beside his neighbor’s dead dog, Wellington, who has been speared with a garden fork. Finding himself under suspicion, Christopher is determined to solve the mystery of who murdered Wellington.

AUDITION INSTRUCTIONS

Actors will be asked to read in a British accent (any except where noted in character descriptions) and are welcome to bring a less-than-one-minute monologue in addition to the cold readings at auditions.

CAST OF CHARACTERS

Christopher: working class, birdlike at times, matter of fact, inquisitive (age 15, but could be played by 13-20 something)
Siobhan: Christopher’s teacher. Proper British, motherly, part psychologist could be man or woman (any age adult)
Ed: Christopher’s father. Tradesman (plumber), jock-like played futbol (mid 30s-mid40s)
Judy: Christopher’s mother. Working class, average intelligence (mid 30s-mid40s)
Shears/Doubling: Neighbor. Cat ladyish (mid 30s-mid 50s)
Mrs. Gascoyne/Doubling: School Principal. Proper British (any adult age)
Rev Peters/Policeman: (any adult age)
Mrs. Alexander/Doubling: Neighbor, busybody, slightly dotty (mature adult)
Police/Duty Sargent: Working class, rough. (any adult age could be men or women)
Roger/Doubling: Judy’s boyfriend/Mrs. Shears ex-husband. snobbier than other characters (mid 30s-mid 50s)
Mr. Thompson/Doubling: Neighbor (any adult age)
